I had to switch because some of the record collections I use were moved to the new site and removed from the old site. That certainly gave me incentive to make the move. From <a href="http://ancestryinsider.blogspot.com/">Ancestry Insider</a> I learned a new version of the site was released in July, adding some new features as well as additional databases.</font></p> <p><font size="2">One new feature is the addition of a filter panel for the list of <a href="https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list">Historical Record Collections</a>. I rarely use the</font> <font size="2">global search function because I get too many hits. I usually choose to Browse the collections to find record sets of interest and then search within that database. The filter function works at all levels, even with the list of collections. Now to quickly get to the set of Ohio records I am interested in, I just have to type “oh” to get the list reduced to just the Ohio collections plus one from B<strong>oh</strong>emia.</font></p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ5duyZs7SDmD8QBTMls5P7J9ewe8w0mtujmIZyWU7gyP2h_8B-53Zl6cSiA_KM72jydw4sw_i8rnbKFe-vlFnhmkbFh2NlV9dKe9vbPpIusNnLd-iklWbFLiKH7by65UB4OKlAas-5eeC/s1600-h/filter_panel%25255B2%25255D.png"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="filter_panel" border="0" alt="filter_panel" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-WgzwRQS9o64/Tj_dHbHZRgI/AAAAAAAAAPk/DTH6j6REyJ0/filter_panel_thumb.png?imgmax=800" width="244" height="155"></a></p> <p><font size="2">In addition, I learned from chatter on the Pfalz-L list that the IGI batch number search is also affected by the new version. Some, but not all, of the batch numbers are now available on the new site, with the new filter panel features. In my <a href="http://www.dvelten.net/vaf-o/resources.htm">Resources</a> page on my web site, I provide links to batch number searches for villages in Germany, Ohio, and Missouri where I have ancestors. These used the old web site, producing results in the old format. I have now converted the German links to use the new web site and new results format, but I found that the Ohio and Missouri batch numbers are not yet available on the new site (as of 6 Aug). Here is an example for an Abstatt, Germany batch number.</font></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-EbWZqqxuvOk/Tj_dH_CiXSI/AAAAAAAAAPo/OPyhnDde13E/s1600-h/IGI_Abstatt%25255B2%25255D.png"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="IGI_Abstatt" border="0" alt="IGI_Abstatt" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-x-BaDLrRdXk/Tj_dIQ2f4LI/AAAAAAAAAPs/XHYMSjJ-y9A/IGI_Abstatt_thumb.png?imgmax=800" width="244" height="118"></a></p> David Veltenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07710293718143454000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3504467360269366024.post-16739528686562845712011-06-02T09:27:00.000-04:002011-06-02T09:27:15.636-04:00Using IGI Search to Solve Problems<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:OfficeDocumentSettings> <o:RelyOnVML/> </o:OfficeDocumentSettings> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:TrackMoves/> <w:TrackFormatting/> <w:PunctuationKerning/> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas/> <w:SaveIfXMLInvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:IgnoreMixedContent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:DoNotPromoteQF/> <w:LidThemeOther>EN-US</w:LidThemeOther> <w:LidThemeAsian>X-NONE</w:LidThemeAsian> <w:LidThemeComplexScript>X-NONE</w:LidThemeComplexScript> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> <w:DontGrowAutofit/> <w:SplitPgBreakAndParaMark/> <w:DontVertAlignCellWithSp/> <w:DontBreakConstrainedForcedTables/> <w:DontVertAlignInTxbx/> <w:Word11KerningPairs/> <w:CachedColBalance/> </w:Compatibility> <m:mathPr> <m:mathFont m:val="Cambria Math"/> <m:brkBin m:val="before"/> <m:brkBinSub m:val="--"/> <m:smallFrac m:val="off"/> <m:dispDef/> <m:lMargin m:val="0"/> <m:rMargin m:val="0"/> <m:defJc m:val="centerGroup"/> <m:wrapIndent m:val="1440"/> <m:intLim m:val="subSup"/> <m:naryLim m:val="undOvr"/> </m:mathPr></w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" DefUnhideWhenUsed="true"

For those not familiar with the <a href="http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true">International Genealogical Index (IGI)</a>, it is an index to microfilm records found in the <a href="https://www.familysearch.org/">FamilySearch</a> library. When volunteers indexed a record set found on a film, the results were assigned a batch number. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>By restricting a search of FamilySearch to a given Batch number, the search is limited to the records from the given locale. This allows more precision in the search and reduces the number of unrelated results.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br>
</div><div class="MsoNormal">This reminded me of how I used the advanced search capability of IGI to find my great grandmother’s family. This was done years ago on the computer at my local Family History Center, before the capability was available on the Internet. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The facts I knew was Michael Velten had married Catherine Miller in Ohio. Should be simple, but a quick check of a printed census index showed there were at least 300 Catherine Millers. There was no Ancestry and no Internet, so manually viewing each entry required cranking through microfilm at the NARA archives in Waltham, Massachusetts.</div><div class="MsoNormal"></div><a href="http://goingtothewest.blogspot.com/2011/06/using-igi-search-to-solve-problems.html#more">Read more »</a>David Veltenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07710293718143454000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3504467360269366024.post-16026474376015198092011-03-20T12:03:00.001-04:002011-03-20T12:11:59.560-04:00Bookmarking for Genealogy<div class="MsoNormal"></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;">I use a variety of resources in my research. The trick is to record the resources in a way that makes them easily accessible when I need them. Another consideration is sharing these resources with others, as a way of making a contribution and paying it back to the genealogy community. This brings up the subject of social bookmarking and how the new technologies can be applied to genealogy. Below the fold I</span><span style="font-size: small;"> describe some of the techniques I use to record and share resources, including how I make use of a social bookmarking site.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><br>

I don’t know if that was the reason the family chose to emigrate, but they settled in New York where they had many other family members who had made the same trek from Abstatt to the US. Her family eventually settled on a farm in Hempstead, New York, out on Long Island. Their city cousins from Brooklyn and Queens would visit on Sundays, a circumstance that greatly irked Friederika’s younger sister, <a href="http://www.dvelten.net/vaf-o/p29.htm#i289">Pauline</a>, who resented living on a smelly farm and envied the fine clothes of her cousins.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"></div><a href="http://goingtothewest.blogspot.com/2011/01/popping-babies-out-of-oven.html#more">Read more »</a>David Veltenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07710293718143454000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3504467360269366024.post-19475144897017681062010-12-23T12:09:00.004-05:002010-12-23T12:16:31.001-05:00Doubts about “Personal Genomics”<div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;">I chose <a href="http://www.familytreedna.com/">Family Tree DNA</a> for my Velten y-DNA project because they have the largest database of results and host over 6000 surname projects, and they specialize in genealogy and nothing else. But it was hard to resist the <a href="https://www.23andme.com/">23andme</a> year-end $99 offer. The 23andme tests include an Ancestral portion, with samplings from both y-DNA and mt-DNA (and I think autosomal DNA), and a Health portion that will supposedly screen me for risks of disease and for traits like baldness. In fact, the marketing hype on the 23andme web site heavily pushes the health aspects of their testing and has caused increasing scrutiny from the <a href="http://goo.gl/HHxgc">FDA</a> and Congress.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"></div><a href="http://goingtothewest.blogspot.com/2010/12/doubts-about-personal-genomics.html#more">Read more »</a>David Veltenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07710293718143454000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3504467360269366024.post-22607030061845940772010-12-16T11:12:00.003-05:002011-01-05T21:45:15.403-05:00Sweetwater Joe<div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: small; line-height: 115%;">I can sympathize with the struggle those who have difficult surnames have getting their names spelled correctly. Many immigrant families simplified and anglicized their names. Examples in my family tree include Backes to Bockis, Hüther to Hiither, Reiter to Rider, and Bischoff to Bishop. The Velten surname is simple and short, so you think it would not be a problem. But I have spent my lifetime spelling my name for people. It’s just a reflex now. Still, there are branches of the family that reverted to the Velton spelling. I just assumed they gave in, but I learned from an aunt that there is another story behind it.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br>

There are over 7,000 persons included in the site, each presented by an individual narrative. The web site is built using John Cardinal’s <a href="http://www.johncardinal.com/ss/">SecondSite</a> program, which creates the site directly from my <a href="http://www.whollygenes.com/">TMG</a> database. SecondSite automatically provides all of the standard hypertext features, including elaborate linking of persons to other persons, and to places and sources. In addition, it builds a master index, a surname index, and a place index with reverse links from a place to persons associated with that place.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"></span></div><a href="http://goingtothewest.blogspot.com/2010/12/navigation-aids-for-genealogy-sites.html#more">Read more »</a>David Veltenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07710293718143454000noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3504467360269366024.post-17303309848346369902010-12-03T21:33:00.005-05:002011-01-05T21:45:45.449-05:00Velten y-DNA Project on Family Tree DNA<span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br>
<div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;">In August, I finally took the plunge and had my DNA tested. At the same time, I decided to volunteer to administer a Velten <a href="http://www.familytreedna.com/public/velten/">surname project</a> on Family Tree DNA (FTDNA.com).</span><span style="font-size: small;"> What convinced me to try DNA testing was the increasing number of queries I was getting about possible relationships after my web site was published. Velten is a saint’s name, the Germanic form of Valentine, and occurs throughout Western Europe, in various phonetic spellings. There was migration around Europe and a lot of emigration to the United States and elsewhere. The Velten surname variants are not extremely common, but are not rare either. A search on just <a href="http://www.castlegarden.org/">Castle Garden</a> shows arrival records for 89 Velten, 5 Velton, 153 Felten, and 67 Felton immigrants (a total of 314). That’s a lot of people to keep track of.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"></span></div><a href="http://goingtothewest.blogspot.com/2010/12/velten-y-dna-project-on-family-tree-dna.html#more">Read more »</a>David Veltenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07710293718143454000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3504467360269366024.post-35442882527327691162010-11-30T19:47:00.006-05:002010-12-23T12:14:27.023-05:00Going to the West<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small; line-height: 115%;">This blog was created to allow me to write at greater depth about the tidbits of family lore and family history that I have collected from family members and my own research. The title of the blog is taken from a traditional American folk song, <i>Going to the West</i>. I'm partial to the <a href="http://www.acousticmusic.com/staines/">Bill Staines</a> recording, from his album of the same name. The song speaks to the determination of our ancestors to take a risk and seek opportunity in a new land.</span><br>
